Hotel Description:
With its sprawling acreage, the JW Marriott Desert Springs is easily one of the largest hotels on the entire West Coast. It has 884 guest rooms — including 101 luxury suites — seven restaurants/bars, the largest indoor ballroom in the Greater Palm Springs area at 25,000 square feet. There’s another 235,000 square feet of meeting space, a spa with 48 treatment rooms, an herb garden, an aviary, five resort pools, two 18-hole golf courses and then, of course, the lake.
Hotel Fun Facts:
The lake is more than four times the size of Bass Lake in Northern California, fed by a well that tunnels 500 feet below the desert floor. A giant 300-horsepower pump distributes water from an aquifer to the lake and surrounding property. Eventually, that same water filters through the soil and back to the aquifer, where the whole process starts anew.
There’s a scuba team to fish golf balls out of the lake, and also an aquatics team. Marriott pumps a tinting chemical into the lake to keep as much sunlight as possible from reaching the lakebed — vegetation growth could cause problems with both the lake’s liner and the fish population — and the aquatics team handles any underwater plantscape that still manages to take hold on the lake floor.
More animals live on the property than humans, who are here one weekend and gone the next. And the population of predators and prey only grows by the day.
